The rise of virtual classrooms

Some of us are lucky enough to attend top universities that have enough pull to get the best lecturers on a wide range of important subjects. While there are advantages and disadvantages of being able to physically attend university, for the majority of us, online learning is already head and shoulders an attractive offer for furthering our learning.

Top lecturers are rare. Getting them all in one spot is a monumentally challenging thing to do. This is also a problem that online classes do not have. Online classes can attract superb lecturers from around the world because it takes much less commitment from an educator’s standpoint to contribute to online classes.

In effect, online classes can compete with top universities in the quality of content that they offer, and they can offer these benefits to anyone with an internet connection, regardless of where the students are in the world.

The rise of online learning in general has been a response to the appetite for learning that everyone connected to the internet collectively has. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits to implementing a virtual training program.

Availability

Aside from an internet connection, most computer hardware, including mobile devices, are powerful enough to take advantage of virtual collaboration software which will intimately connect students with instructors.

There isn’t just the availability of the technology to consider, though.

Online classrooms are available in the sense that they require no commute time, and very little preparation. Even if a student needs a one-on-one with an instructor, a simple text chat can connect the two instantly from anywhere.

In short, there are many times fewer barriers to utilizing virtual classrooms than there are conventional ones. Team members can connect easily from around the world and enjoy lessons from instructors that are likewise scattered across the globe.

Scheduling

Scheduling online education is much easier than with conventional classrooms. Most modern software applications have registration pages and reminders to ensure that participants aren’t late and are in fact present for their training course.

But in the event that there are a few participants who can’t make it to the class, that’s not to worry, since the class lectures are easily recorded for later reference. Traditional classrooms struggle with having to repeat themselves, but virtual ones do not.

Budget

Two of the most significant costs in modern life are housing and transportation. Traditional classrooms are demanding in both of those regards; they demand that you have some means of physical transport to the physical classroom itself, and that also entails that you need to live nearby. Both of these are incredibly expensive, and bear the majority of the cost of attending a good school in person.

Add this to the sticker price of attendance, and you will quickly find that virtual classes are far superior in terms of cost to the student.

Virtual classrooms bypass the auxiliary costs of transportation and geography-specific housing, and they themselves are much cheaper to run, by not requiring the same facilities that brick and mortar classrooms have.

These savings, when coupled with the fact that top lecturers can contribute to online classes from their own homes, means that the quality of education material in online classes can actually be second to none in terms of bang for buck.

They get better quicker

Some of the oldest institutions in the world are institutions of learning. This is both a good and a bad thing. On the one hand, keeping such institutions running for such a long time is worthy. If there is any cause that’s worthy of standing the test of time, it is surely the pursuit of human learning.

But on the other, it also means that learning within these institutions can easily come with its own restrictive ways of doing things which are very slow to adapt to the world around us.

Virtual classrooms have low overhead, and they also have feedback tools built into them such as student polling that can enable seamless instructor led changes in the lesson plans in response to different learning styles.

These adjustments in the curriculum for effective virtual training can be made much faster in an advanced digital learning management system than new versions of textbooks can be written, printed, and distributed. The process happens seamlessly without the burdensome cost passed to the student in the same way that traditional curriculum adjustments take place.
